With names like Penske and Earnhardt calling Mooresville home to their headquarters, it’s easy to see why we are known as Race City USA. There are many race shops in town, but there are a few that shouldn’t be missed.

Jr. Motorsports – At the shop of one of NASCAR’s most beloved drivers, fans can browse racing memorabilia and watch mechanics preparing Xfinity Series cars for upcoming races. Browse the displays for signed helmets and trophies, or pick up some cool merchandise in the gift shop.

Team Penske – The campus that houses Team Penske’s racing teams is as impressive as their racing program. Within two buildings totaling more than 424,000 square feet, every detail supports the Penske philosophy – performance paired with style. Inside, fans will find a nearly 5,000 square foot gift shop and a 432-foot fan walk above the garage floor that allows fans to watch crews preparing the cars. More than 1,000 linear feet of graphics outlines the organization’s racing history.

Kyle Busch Motorsports – The corporate headquarters for one of NASCAR’s more colorful drivers is home to his Truck Series vehicles. There is a large display of trophies, cars, firesuits and more, as well as a 15-foot TV wall running video of some of Kyle’s memorable moments. The retail store has a large selection of shirts, hats and other memorabilia.

Dive Deep into Motorsports History

For a truly unique experience, walk among Legends and Kings at the NC Auto Racing Walk of Fame in downtown Mooresville. Stroll along the sidewalk plaques and snap photos of your favorite inductees’ markers, including Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty, and Tony Stewart. Afterward, head to the NC Auto Racing Hall of Fame. a museum dedicated to preserving the history of all motorsports. There is an impressive display of vehicles, from drag racing cars to stock cars, as well as a theater where fans can catch videos on the history of NASCAR.

For everything that is historical and automotive, head over to Memory Lane Museum, where more than 150 vehicles are on display. Honored for “outstanding achievement in the preservation of automotive history” by the Antique Automobile Club of America, the museum boasts more than 15 different types of race cars, as well as pedal cars, motorcycles, tractors and more. The museum also features cars and props used in movies, tv shows, documentaries, commercials, and tv appearances.

Channel Your Inner Speed Demon

If touring race shops and learning about racing’s greatest moments in history has you all fired up to get behind the wheel, head over to GoPro Motorplex for a racing experience you won’t forget! Modeled after a famous kart track in Parma, Italy, the 0.7-mile facility features rental karts that reach speeds up to 55 miles per hour. You can test your skills on the same track that hosts some of the largest professional karting series races in the country. Be sure to ask for a helmet cam so you can have footage of your race to show your friends!

Go Karting

When it’s a bit chilly to brave the outdoor kart track at GoPro Motorplex, there is also an indoor option for navigating the track. The Pit Indoor Kart Racing’s 70,000 Sq. Ft. track is one of the largest, single indoor kart tracks in the country. With speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, and a 20-foot wide track, that means more passing, more speed, and more of that adrenaline rush. The completely indoor facility also features a climbing wall, arcade, laser tag, bumper cars and more. It’s the perfect spot for entertaining adults and kids for the better part of the day. If you are feeling a bit nostalgic, try a visit to Memory Lane Motorsports and Historical Automotive Museum. Featuring over 150 vehicles on display, this unique museum is a fabulous collection of automobiles, pedal cars, antique toys, motorcycles, tractors, antique clothing, memorabilia, trophies, and so much more! Memory Lane traces the history of the automobile from 1901 to present day and the history of racing from the early moonshine era to the super speedways of today. After a day of climbing, karting, or museuming, treat yourself to an afternoon or evening of beer sampling! Mooresville is home to some great craft beer breweries, pubs, and ale houses, where you are sure to find a new favorite. Ghostface Brewing features up to 20 unique and tasty beers along with mead and ciders at any given time in their taproom. They have a second brewery, Beer Lab, which was created from the R&D (Research & Drinking) events at the original location, where they would unleash 7 new beers at a time and experiment with strange ingredients, fruit and yeast.
